Rolling into the Future

We are Equilibrio, a Focus Project at ETH Zürich supported by the Robotic Systems Lab under the supervision of Prof. Marco Hutter. Our interdisciplinary team of mechanical and electrical engineers from ETH Zürich and systems engineers from ZHAW is developing a self-balancing robotic unicycle that can move on flat as well as uneven terrain.

Why a Unicycle?

Because it’s the perfect symbol of dynamic balance. Unlike a two-wheeled robot, a single wheel demands constant motion and intelligent control. Mastering it means unlocking new insights into agile locomotion and compact, efficient design – priniciples that apply far beyond this project. 

The project offers us a unique learning opportunity while creating a novel research platform in mobile robotics. We look forward to presenting our results at the Focus Rollout in May 2026!
